COUPLES & FAMILY THERAPY IN LONDON, ONTARIO

Relationships & Family

Relationship difficulty is not a sign that something has gone irreparably wrong. It is what happens when people who matter to each other are stuck in a pattern neither of them chose. Coming in does not mean you have already decided how it ends.

Not sure what kind of support you need? We’ll help you find the right place to start.

The people closest to you can be the hardest part.

Conflict with a partner or a family member carries a particular weight, because these are the relationships you cannot simply step away from. The same arguments come back in different words. Distance grows in a way neither of you intended. It is easy to start wondering whether wanting it to work is enough on its own.

We support several areas of relationships and family, and we want you to know: coming in does not mean giving up on each other.

Couples Therapy

Couples Therapy

Couples therapy is not only for relationships in crisis, and it is not a process where a therapist decides who is right. Most couples arrive stuck in a pattern: the same disagreement in new clothes, a growing distance, or a rupture that has not been repaired. Sessions look at what is happening between you rather than sorting out fault, which is usually where the change is available.

When only one of you wants to come

This is common, and it is not a dead end. Individual work on a relationship changes the dynamic you are part of, which often changes the relationship itself. You are welcome to start on your own.

Family Therapy

Family Therapy

Families carry history, roles assigned long ago, and expectations nobody agreed to out loud. When something shifts, an illness, a loss, a teenager growing up, a parent needing care, those old arrangements stop working and nobody is quite sure what replaced them. Sessions make room for more than one

Parents and Teenagers

Parents and Teenagers

Parents often arrive worried they have left it too late, or that asking for help means they have failed at something. Neither is true. We work with families and with adolescents directly, depending on what fits.

Family Members with Addiction

Family Members with Addiction

When someone you love is struggling with addiction, the attention goes to them, and the exhaustion, fear and resentment you are carrying go unnamed. You may have organized years of your life around managing it. Support here is for you, in your own right, and not conditional on what they choose to do.

Your grief is welcome here.
Your pain is welcome here.
You are welcome here.

If any of this sounds like what you're carrying,

a free 15-minute consultation call is a low-pressure place to begin.

Areas Related to Relationships & Family

Relationship difficulty overlaps with other things people come to us for, like attachment wounds (where early relationships shaped what you expect from closeness), people-pleasing and perfectionism (when keeping the peace has cost you your own voice), or adolescent issues. Therapy isn't about perfect categories or starting points.  We can simply meet you where you are, when you're ready.

How We Work: In-Person & Virtual Grief Counselling

In Person

We see clients in person at 130 Thompson Road in London, Ontario, inside the Thompson Medical Center (TMC+) with plenty of free parking available. Many couples prefer to attend together in person.

Virtually

Virtual sessions are available across Ontario, which can help when partners are in different places or when scheduling around children is a barrier. You can read more about virtual therapy across Ontario if you'd like.

Approach

Your therapist will not take sides or issue verdicts. Early sessions usually focus on understanding the pattern you are both caught in, and on making it possible to have the conversation you have not been able to have on your own.

Naming what's wrong is hard. You don't have to do it alone or get it right on the first try. Let's start with a conversation, and we'll help you find the right place to start.

If you don't see your exact situation here, please reach out anyway. Chances are, we can help.

Common Questions About Couples &
Family Therapy

What happens in a first couples session?

The first session is mostly about understanding what brought you in, and both of you will get time to say it in your own words. Your therapist will not be deciding who is right. There is nothing you need to prepare.

Do both partners need to attend?

It helps, but it is not required to begin. Many people start on their own, either because their partner is not ready or because they want to think it through first. Individual work on a relationship still changes the relationship.

What if my partner won't come?

That is a common reason people reach out, and it is workable. Starting alone is not a lesser version of couples therapy, and partners sometimes join later once they see what it actually involves.

Is couples therapy only for relationships in trouble?

No. Some couples come during a specific rupture, others come during a transition like a new baby, a move or a career change, and some come to get better at something that is already working.

Do you work with families and teenagers?

Yes. We work with families together and with adolescents individually, depending on what fits the situation. Karissa Paterson is our adolescent specialist.

Do you offer virtual therapy across Ontario?

Yes, we offer secure video sessions anywhere in Ontario, as well as in person at our London office.

What does therapy cost?

Current fees are listed on our therapy pricing page. Many extended health plans provide coverage, though what is covered depends on your insurance plan and your therapist's designation.

What do I do if I'm not sure where to start?
